Yesterday was a most excellent day. I woke up at 5 a.m. to call the Padre Island National Seashore number to confirm that some Kemp’s Ridley baby sea turtles were being released at 6:45.
My mom, sister, and I hopped in the car, stopped at Wal-Mart for some film, and headed to the beach. We arrived a few minutes late, but got to watch the tiny turtles meander toward the sea. The sand was squishy and cool with morning dew. It was a truly beautiful event.
The last turtle made it to the ocean, and all the onlookers applauded. My mom, sister, and I headed to IHOP for breakfast. Off-color jokes ensued when Megan tried to give me the sausage link from her breakfast platter:
Megan: Here, Man, take my sausage.
Me: Why? Don’t tell me you don’t want it just because it looks like a petrified-
Megan: Don’t finish that sentence.
Me: [laughing, but switching into my National Geographic documentary voiceover] With time, the Ice Man’s body has shriveled and become darker. [holding the small, thin sausage on my fork] From this evidence, anthropologists surmise that Ice Man was…single.
After I ate the artifact and my mom picked up the check, we headed to Bed Bath and Beyond, Target, and Michaels. The trip to BBandB confirmed something I’d been suspecting - I am a woman with some kind of genetically programmed love of home accessories. I cooed over picture frames and throw pillows. Never mind that I seldom take photos and don’t even have a couch to put throw pillows on… I pondered marriage just so I could make a bridal registry at BBandB. Oh, how shallow am I.
Then Megan said, “You know, I’d like to get married, like, five times. And get lots of wedding presents every time!”
Oh, how less shallow am I.
I eventually got some essentials for my move to New York and bought a margarita freeze and fruit cup at La Paletera. We returned home and dropped like flies - flies that had really enjoyed each other’s company looking at bedding and welcoming an endangered species into the word- before eating a mini-Thanksgiving dinner.
