“Despite” can be as good as it gets

Lately, I’ve been writing more in longhand during the day with the intention of blogging my writing once I get home to the computer. Last week was a whirlwind of activity, though. This is what I meant to post Friday:

Finally, a good day at school. Nothing especially amazing happened, but nothing horrible happened, either. The first period class was under control and most students were doing work. There are a few students in this particular class who don’t do any work in any of their classes. I asked their homeroom teacher about them and he said, “I’ve called their moms, and they said they don’t know what to do with them.”

When did that become a legitimate excuse for parents to offer? I’ll never forget when one extremely vulgar and angry student’s dad finally wandered over to the school (after being summoned to “mandatory” parent-teacher conferences for weeks). The dad shrugged when I told him what his son regularly did in my class - from singing explicit song lyrics to describing hardcore pornography he had watched. “Yeah, he’s no good,” he said with a sigh.

Who’s the victim here? Do we all share the title? What problem begat the other? So many questions… I tend to believe some of these kids are so gone, like infected lepers, that we can’t tell where one lesion ends and another begins. All we see is one continuous wound. Still, I don’t think anyone is inherently malevolent. Misbehavior is reinforced and learned.

But enough of that. The weather’s here. Wish they were beautiful.

I think I need some time to myself tonight to straighten up and recover from a long week. I’ve been out and about a lot and haven’t had the chance to lounge, peruse the web, or look for a random episode of Date My Mom. Ahh, priorities.

Mas en el futuro.
