Today’s lesson: Cheese is not a vegetable

Student (a seventh-grader): I wouldn’t eat vegetarian pizza - all it has is crust, sauce, and vegetables.

Me: And cheese.

Student: No. A vegetarian pizza.

Me: Right. It’s not vegan, so it has cheese.

Student: No, it doesn’t.

Me: Why do you say that?

Student: [Looking at me incredulously] Hello! Cheese is a vegetable.

Me: [Laughing] What?

Student: It comes from the ground!

Me: No, it doesn’t. It comes from milk. It’s a dairy product.

The funny thing about that is that even if cheese was a vegetable it would still be on a vegetarian pizza.
