History lessons

Today I was grading eighth grade essays on the reasons for and difficulties of immigration throughout history. Most essays were pretty bland. The ones that stood out were racist and insensitive, just plain inaccurate, or ummm, pretty much right, but hysterical:

“Some immigrants had weird names and had to change them to something that sounded like their name. Like Timmytashkado would be changed to Tim. Some even had such weird names that they just named them John.”

The above came from a student with a seemingly normal African-American name, except it has a jarring, silent ‘z’ at the beginnning. Ironic?

Another student mentioned that cramped tenement housing was one of many immigrant hardships:

“They was small. No tv, no sinck, no beds for probably like 6-15 people, no carpet, no table. No place to rest in that room.”

Get alive? Not to mention that the note makes no sense anyway.

Amanda, you have some of the dumbest noters (or maybe it’s just one). Heed him/them not.
