HORNS UP:

*I love these shoes in nautical red. I have a feeling they would tackle slippery stuff at the subway station with much panache.

*After being on my “to watch” list for four years, I finally saw The Way We Were. If you ever wondered what it’s like to date someone with insensitive friends who make offensive comments about race, class, and politics, watch this movie. Or just ask me.

*A former tutee of mine has been accepted to every elite boarding/day school on her list. Now she just has to visit each campus and figure out exactly what she wants her high school experience to be. I can’t take credit for this victory, but I did help her conquer analogies. Yay for Janet!

*A few weeks ago, I was asked to take on more writing tasks at work, instead of just editing. I’m calling it a promotion.

*I tend to shun the mainstream, and Kanye and I had some problems back in 2005, but man, I love Graduation. The samples are brilliant and the beats stick in your head. I play this album from the time I get home to the time I go to bed. Talk about “The Good Life.”

HORNS DOWN:

*I’ve been feeling really tired for a few days. It’s because I’m busy professionally and socially. Going to bed has never been more fun.

*My dad had some tests done and has begun more low-dose chemotherapy. After knowing how incapacitated his first rounds made him, I wasn’t looking forward to this. Still, I know it’s important. At least he has a positive outlook. It helps.

*Flaky people. I can be one, I know. But I’m thinking of a particular flaky person who flakes for reasons that aren’t good enough. (I’m not talking about you, A.L.). I don’t like to finagle someone into hanging out only to suspect the entire time that he or she is thinking, “I have other people to hang out with soon.” It’s this whole more popular than thou issue, and I’m not having it. I have other important engagements anyway. And a lot of microwave popcorn.

*Rainy morning commutes on express trains. If I have to hear one more dopey guy threaten to shove another dopey guy (which I doubt he’d actually do), I’ma whack someone with my umbrella. Calm down, people, and move over.

*Yet another family wants me to tutor their little boy. I’m pleased with the success of my tutoring business, but I’m not sure I can take another student right now. I’m worried about overextending myself, but also hesitant to turn down new business opportunities. I do have other goals, you know. They say you can sleep when you’re dead, but what about maintain close friendships and go to book signings? I’m pretty sure I can only do that when I’m alive.

I think that should be the MTA’s new slogan - “Calm down, people, and more over.” Probably more effective than that whole see something, say something garbage.

On another note, any update on your juicer? Thinking of getting one myself and wondered how it was turning out for you.

Hi, Brendon! My juicer, Gaston, is doing well. I’m really happy with the purchase. I’ve been making these great carrot-heavy juices lately. Today I made a quart of grapefruit juice, but I haven’t tried it yet. I’ll probably post more juicing stuff as I experiment more with different fruits and veggies.
