Tonight I went to a reading by Heather Armstrong, also known as Dooce, one of the biggest bloggers ever to put fingers to keyboard and think, “Am I going too overboard making fun of my family here? Nah…”
I sat in the front row of the Tribeca Barnes & Noble, shocked that I wasn’t being pushed aside by some fan more reproductive than I. While waiting, I met Crystal and Philip, recovering Mormons with buh-dum-boom-chh! senses of humor.
Then Dooce, the Dooce, took the stage. In clear view of her nostrils, I actually saw and heard this person I’ve been reading for years. The Bon Jovi concert in Central Park certainly didn’t give me that kind of rush. (I did, however, enjoy the free Doritos). The closest thing I’ve felt to it in a long time was probably meeting Judy Blume. There’s something so inspiring about seeing someone you admire and sharing a moment.
Cheesy as it sounds, I think that moment was when Heather came on stage and saw all the people waiting for her. Her first book, a memoir of her first pregnancy and early motherhood, debuted today. Whether you read her or not, like mommy blogs or not, she’s doing something many people would love to do - making a living writing about her life.
I think that’s a beautiful thing, and I consider her new book a huge accomplishment for her, as well as the blogosphere.
Congrats, Dooce!

Found your blog while googling Dooce- we’re off to see her tomorrow at her book reading in Seattle. So looking forward to it! Glad you had a good time!
Hi, Carrie! I hope you enjoyed the reading.
