The iPhone made me do it

This week, like many before, has been a blur. I’ve been working from 9-8:15 each day with three commutes factored in. The good news is that I’m plowing through books. The bad news is that I haven’t spent more than an hour on my new couch.

The iPhone version of pancakes for supper

There were times when my parents didn’t want to cook dinner. They were exhausted; we didn’t have a lot of groceries. Because there’s actually very little food delivery in Texas, usually one of them would get in the car and procure delicious, paper-wrapped, predictably palatable food from somewhere else. My favorite was pizza, because that’s hardwired. You are human. You like pizza.

New York’s firest

A few weeks ago, a fire marshal came to my workplace. He went from floor to floor for a quick debriefing about fire safety with tips ranging from the obvious (make sure all of your co-workers know about the fire) to the absurd (always carry a flashlight with you). “Don’t worry if there’s a fire,” he said, “Even though firefighters will have to climb a few stairs to get to you, everyone will be safe.” I glanced out the 32nd floor window and wasn’t so sure.

Weekly iPhone dump

I think I want to do a weekly iPhone photo share that tells those of you who care (my parents, I think) more about my everyday life. My apologies to everyone else. Please accept my invitation to floss your teeth or feed the hungry with your word power when faced with this new installment.

Summer in my step

I have a massive case of windinsailsitis tonight. For some reason, I just feel chipper. The recipe calls for two parts long weekend out of the city, one part finished writing projects, and some secret ingredient even I can’t name. It’s lightly roasted to 84 degrees, enough to warm the sun into a flamboyant playground ball. Add soul music and walking along Central Park to taste.

Brace yourself

A junkie walked into the bodega with a cheap bracelet muttering, “Bracelet. Real gold. Wanna buy a bracelet? Gen-u-ine.”

A walk around the hood

The pictures I took this weekend were worth millions of words, and most of them were expletives. I exaggerate, but wow, is my transition to an SLR ever more challenging than I thought. Because I was so happy with my first set of pictures, I figured I would go to Fort Tryon Park in uptown Manhattan this weekend and make like Ansel Adams.

Neighborhood shooting

I planned on going to a Barbara Ehrenreich reading/signing tonight, but changed my mind when I heard her latest book is a political satire. I’m feeling especially down about our country right now - normal ills + side effects of election mudslinging. I don’t need to hear any more about all the problems facing America. Yes, we’re all screwed. I got that memo.

Peek at my week

The first thing I do when I wake up in the morning to the trills of my iPhone alarm is check my email in bed. O, luxury of luxuries! Despite having a laptop, I don’t think I ever did that until recently. Also, I was running an errand in Brooklyn with TBID the other night, and I actually opened up a Google map for him while he was driving. He looked at it; we got there. Another triumph of technology!

The iPhone convert

Back on the dark side, my cellphone camera mostly took pictures of the bottom of my bag, because the capture button had been idiotically placed on the side of the device. This was something I hadn’t noticed when I bought the phone in cheap haste before I went home for Christmas two years ago. (I’d lost another cellphone the previous evening at a holiday party, and worked myself into a conniption predicated on disconnection and the loss of all those phone numbers of people I didn’t really call anyway).
